The Teenagers

Metro
03 April 2008

Attempting to pick up where Serge Gainsbourg left off, The Teenagers are three Frenchmen who consider themselves gifts to women, despite their songs being about loveless one night stands, underage cheerleaders and vodka soaked house parties.

Though old enough to know better, an obsession with adolescence dominates their pervy electro-pop.

They’ve been running with the same joke ever since forming in 2005. Last year’s Homecoming single combined deadpan cheek and techno-disco beats as they bragged over throbbing synths about the deflowering of an almost-relative. It became their catchy calling card, and was followed by more infectious filth about stolen Jazzmaster guitars, fame hungry celebs and - when they are really struggling for material - the soppier sides of clumsy teenage romance.

Signed to Merok, home of Klaxons and Crystal Castles, the London based trio are currently sandwiching in these British dates around a US tour, to follow up the release of last month’s debut album, Reality Check. If their song, Feeling Better can be believed, a live show from The Teenagers will see the trio write their name on ‘lucky’ girls’ bodies and sing ’songs that turn you on’. There is nevertheless a certain je ne sais quoi to their lo-fi beats and bad attitude.

Tomorrow, Stereo, Glasgow, 8pm.
